The structures of science were designed to promote the best scientific ideas and the most talented scientists.  However, numerous studies have documented that the processes used for scientific evaluation are compromised by implicit biases related to gender, race, and other personal or social characteristics of scientists. I will review some of the research on the impact of implicit bias on the practice of science, and highlight strategies for moving beyond bias, toward the ideal of a scientific meritocracy.
