“I’m Alessia and I’m the editor-in-chief of the 2024-25 Journal committee! A little about me: I’m doing my internship at the Vascular Cognitive Impairment lab at the UMC, where I am going to work on finding a better way to cluster neuropsychological tests into cognitive domains and on using this information to improve the accuracy of lesion-symptom mapping and of clinical tools used to predict post-stroke cognitive impairment. When I’m not at the UMC, you can find me travelling, enjoying some sports (fun fact: I used to do fencing????), or... drinking coffee, I guess. Actually, that’s also when I am at the UMC. I am super excited about this year’s issues of the Journal of Neuroscience and Cognition and I hope you are too!”
“I’m Fulya, and I’m thrilled to be one of the editors of the Journal this year. Basically, I’ll be chasing you and your supervisors for your awesome insights all year long, spreading the neuroscience nerdiness across campus! If you ever feel like switching roles and hunting me down instead, you’ll usually find me at the Translational Neuroscience Department at UMCU, where I’m doing my major internship. My research is focused on dynamics of cell migration and the formation of neuronal circuits, more specifically on the role of perivascular oligodendrocyte precursor cells during brain development in health and disease. Beyond the academic world, I love going to the cinema, exploring nature, spending time with friends and playing card games. I’m also a big fan of travelling, dancing, skiing and reading. I’m looking forward to having a blast with our board and connecting with all of you throughout the year, sharing knowledge and making it fun along the way!”
“I am Britt and I’m one of the editors for this year’s journal! I’m really looking forward to this year and to create a journal that you all will hopefully enjoy :) Something about me: right now I’m mostly busy with my internship at the Translational Neuroscience department in the UMC Utrecht, researching synaptic alterations in ALS using brain organoids (very cool, I love synapses haha). Furthermore, I really enjoy being outdoors, reading books (which I should probably do more) and spending time with friends :) Really excited for what’s to come!!”
“Kia ora! My name is Elena, and I’m super excited to be joining the journal as an editor this year. Currently, I’m completing my major internship, where I’m focusing on social touch and the post-auricular muscle reflex. A fun fact about me: my home country Aotearoa, New Zealand, is the furthest country from the Netherlands—about 19,000 km away!”
“I am Ádám, one of the Editors of the new board. I joined the Journal because I wanted to try out how it is to be on the other side of preparing a publication, and to see what goes into publishing a journal. Besides the Journal, I am also doing my major internship at the Experimental Psychology Department about neural tracking of speech in infants; meaning a lot of (fun) EEG data analysis. In my free time, I like to game, read and (binge)watch movies and series. I especially enjoy fantasy and sci-fi, so I am really excited about our first issue!”
“I am Guusje and I’ll be doing the design of the journal together with Lena. This year we will design the logo, covers and lay-out of the journal. We are also still looking for artists that want to contribute to making the journal fun to read ánd fun to look at (so if you are interested, let us know!). Besides my interest in neuroscience, I love to sew and make my own clothes, go to musea, surf and escape to warm countries:)) I am very excited to combine my creativity with my interest in neuroscience with the journal this year! ”
“I’m Lena, and I am one of the designers on the current board of the Journal of Neuroscience and Cognition. I’m partially responsible for creating the new logo, and will primarily focus on designing the cover of our upcoming issue, so stay tuned for that! My two biggest passions in life are art and science, so being able to combine the two by making art for our programme’s scientific journal is a dream come true for me. I’ve been drawing since I was a kid, and like to work with all kinds of different mediums (except for watercolour, which is the bane of my existence). Apart from drawing, I also enjoy reading, watching anime, and playing video games. I started my internship at the Hol lab at the beginning of January, and will spend most of my days in the histology lab slicing away behind the vibratome. My supervisor is investigating the relationship between astrocyte reactivity, APoE genotype, and Alzheimer’s disease, and I will be helping her out whilst asking stupid questions like “what is PFA?” and “is that organoid supposed to be shaped like a lopsided donut?”. Please pray for my supervisor in these trying times.”
“My name is Willem and I am the secretary and treasurer for the JNC board of 2025. My job is to overlook our endless number of emails, to keep in touch with our sponsors, and, most exciting, to organise the journal release parties! I already cannot wait to present our first journal edition with the theme Time and Space. I joined the JONC committee, because I like the idea of sharing with each other what we are busy working on everyday, since we normally do not see each other much within our master programme. Sharing our knowledge through a journal is very valuable and drives me to help to create a beautiful final product (the 3 ECTS are also very welcome of course). When I am not busy looking for sponsors, I love to play sports, play the piano, and play with brains. No worries, I am always very responsible in my internship. My internship takes place in the UMC, where I am doing research in a new brain stimulation technique (tACS) for patients with delirium. I love the combination of using brain measurement and stimulation techniques while simultaneously being in contact with patients and their family members. I hope to see you all at our release parties and other events”
“My name is Frankie and I am the Public Relations Manager of the JONC 2024-2025!! This means that I’m in charge of all of our social media (including this website). I am currently doing an internship at the UMCU where we are trying to establish a mouse model for binge-purge behaviour in anorexia nervosa to investigate which brain ensembles are activated during this behaviour. (This means I spend most of my days hugging the mice here (: ) Apart from this my hobby is basically the having of hobbies, especially when they involve creating things (drawing, writing, crocheting, beading, knitting) but I also enjoy music, reading and (scary) video games!”
